If you're about to start writing to a prisoner and are wondering how to start here are some suggestions:-

  • tell them a little about yourself--your age, your occupation, where you live
  • a bit about what interests you--your hobbies and so on
  • do not focus on material things--but on more simple pleasures and enjoyments
  • remember, a simple card or short letter from you will mean a huge amount to a lonely prisoner
  • do not send gifts of money
  • you may wish for them to write via a church or other PO box address
  • be clear about your expectations--if you are looking for just friendship or something more
  • be persistent--one of the most disappointing thing for a prisoner is when someone stops writing for no apparent reason
  • be prepared to develop a friendship which may surprise you!

Why not find a pen-pal today?
